MATCH SPRINTS

The Match Sprint is a tactical duel between two riders over three laps (750 metres), usually settled in a best-of-three format for maximum drama. Positions are drawn, with one rider leading at little more than walking pace early on - often coming to a complete standstill in a "track stand" as each waits for the other to blink first. Then, in an instant, it explodes into an all-out sprint. Famously described as "slow, slow, then flat-out," it's a mesmerising blend of cunning, nerve and raw power.
