Richardson and Lavreysen set for epic Friday night sprint showdown
The two fastest riders on the planet will go head-to-head on Friday night at London 3 Day as Matt Richardson renews his thrilling rivalry with Dutch superstar Harrie Lavreysen.
It will be the only opportunity to see these two titans of track sprinting race against each other in the UK this year, bringing one of the sport’s biggest contests to London.
Both riders will arrive fresh from the 2026 UCI Track World Championships, taking place on Chongming Island in Shanghai, China, from 14-18 October. With world titles decided just days before London 3 Day, the pair will bring peak form - and potentially fresh rainbow jerseys - to the capital.
Lavreysen has built a record that places him among the greatest track cyclists of all time. The Dutchman is a five-time Olympic champion and has collected an extraordinary 19 world titles, including four gold medals at the 2025 UCI Track World Championships.
Richardson, however, has proven he can defeat the seemingly unbeatable Dutchman.
The British rider won three medals at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games - silver in the individual sprint and keirin, plus bronze in the team sprint - and is also a former world and Commonwealth champion. In 2025, he became the first rider in history to complete the flying 200 metres in under nine seconds, setting a world record of 8.857 seconds.

Their rivalry reached a new level at the 2026 European Championships, where Richardson defeated Lavreysen to win the individual sprint title before overcoming him again on his way to keirin gold. His sprint victory ended Lavreysen’s unbeaten run in international competition stretching back to 2019.
Now, straight from the biggest track cycling event of the year, the two fastest men in the sport are ready to meet again.
Lavreysen will arrive determined to reassert his dominance, while Richardson will be looking to produce another landmark victory in front of a home crowd.
With explosive speed, tactical battles and two of cycling’s biggest stars sharing the track, Friday night at London 3 Day promises to be unmissable.
